If you are seeking a hideaway from Bali’s chaotic Kuta, Ubud provides a welcome respite with its secluded paths, calming temples and specialised spa resorts. Surrounded by rice paddies, coconut trees and lush forests of green, Ubud is seen as the cultural centre of Bali.
The road leading up to Ubud features little villages specialising in handicrafts like Celuk (silver jewellery), Batuan (paintings) and Mas (wood carvings). I am not a big fan of temples, and besides, everywhere you look in Ubud, there is a temple, and they all look the same. So, I spent my time mostly doing activities. I highly recommend visiting Alas Harum at 7 a.m. to beat all the queues, doing ATV and rafting, visiting the monkey forest early in the morning (it opens at 8 a.m.), and walking around the city at night. The centre was to busy for us. The traffic is awful but you get used to it. Plenty of eateries and shops. Huge variety of shop types. Expensive to cheap. Lots of cultural views to see and activities to do. Spas were amazing and cheap. Taxis were great to book on line. Use go get or similar. Outside markets were the placed to get cheap items to take home. We had a wonderful time but needed another week to really do the place justice, we are all coming back.RobynAustralia
