Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.
Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

Madeira is a lovely island with many spectacular hikes and breathtaking views, but the city of Funchal was the least satisfying aspect of our visit. Driving in and out of the city, to and from our hotel, was stressful and confusing: roads are narrow and wind around blind curves, the locals drive very fast, and because parking is seemingly a free-for-all you spend a lot of time dodging parked cars and making room for other cars to go past you. The downtown businesses and restaurants have surrendered entirely to the crowds of tourists from the daily cruise ships, which dock in the middle of the central harbor. As a result, the staff at shops and eateries are thoroughly tired and unenthusiastic about their jobs. We plan to return to Madeira, but we will definitely pick another town to stay in.

Madeira is a wonderful location to visit.
Madeira is a wonderful location to visit. It feels incredibly safe and relaxed. We traveled in the Spring and it was a bit too cool to swim. I would absolutely return in the Summer. We had 2 nights but really 3-5 nights would have been better.
Our return flight got cancelled due to winds, which happens frequently, so plan accordingly by getting the insurance or make sure to have a buffer if you have a connecting flight from a different airline.

We have visited Funchal previously and have found different activities and places to visit during each holiday, The restaurants located in Santa Maria area have a choice of menus at competitive prices. The cable car from Funchal to Monte is an experience not to be missed, along with a toboggan ride. The tuk-tuk tours are also worth a couple of hours of your time to visit several areas beyond the centre and into local village areas. We also visited the Valley of the Nuns during our recent holiday, and enjoyed lunch in a local restaurant. The bus journey from Funchal took less than an hour, with return tickets costing less than 7 euros for 2 adults. Our recent holiday was during the annual Flower Festival and parade which is an experience I would recommend

Loved the terrace and the view!
Loved the terrace and the view! We had breakfast and dinner on the terrace every day. The bedrooms are spacious and with ample storage. Beds are very comfortable with lots of pillows and extra bedding. We cooked in a lot and found everything we needed. Large grocery stores are a 3 minute drive away. The location was perfect for easy access to the motorways for all the hikes we did around the island. Funchal was a perfect location to explore the island. We would love to go back some day and would try to stay at this property again.

Stay in the old area which is close to the grocery, market, restaurants, etc.
Take the cable car up to Monte when there is no cruise ships in town, otherwise the wait could be hours to get a ticket and also more wait to board. The toboggans would also be a long wait when cruise ships are in town. Our tip is to hire a cab driver for a day or two, they are worth the cost rather than rent cars. They will take you places not on regular tours and will wait while you finish your hike or other excursions. To adequately see the whole island, expect to stay about 2 weeks.

Funchal is a relatively large city (proportionally to the...
Funchal is a relatively large city (proportionally to the island's size) that has small city vibes; it's filled with history and has its charm.
Though very touristy, you can find many spots with local life (this in March/April). This could be very different during high season. Climate/temps is also great.
Even though it's pretty steep in some parts, the city is very walkable (for those that don't mind getting the steps in), though taxis are a great option to get around
Must dos/pros:
- Monte cable car
- Carreiros do Monte (sled rides)
- Botanical garden
- Boat tour to Desertas islands
- Levada walks/tours
- Private or group tours of the Island (I recommend Hit the Road Madeira - they're the best hands down!)
- Many good restaurants
- the people are very nice and friendly
Cons:
- In some parts the city is extremely steep and for people with mobility problems this may be an issue
- Depending how many cruise ships are docked, the sudden inflow of tourists can be a pain
- 5G towers everywhere (this is especially important for people that are sensitive to nnEMFs and/or give a sh*t for their health - don't forget to soak in the sun and ground as much as possible to counter the bad nnEMF effects)
- Mercado dos Lavradores is pretty but a tourist trap (worth the visit but not for shopping)
The best thing related to the property is that it really seemed to be a genuine house of a Madeiran family. Lots of things previously used by the family, which in our view is a family of intelectuals, are still in the house like furniture, books, nice music. Beautiful garden and lots of flowers. Many facilities that bring you close to the facilities of your own home. Elsa is a very helpful and friendly person. Local restaurants with excellent food and store are at walking distance. Good price for what the property has to offer.
The staff were so friendly and helpful. Fantastic breakfast. Plenty of choice and all fresh. The grounds were spacious and plenty of different areas to sit in. Loved the daily happy hour! We ate both in the Alfama and Basilico restaurants and the food was excellent. Elton John tribute night was great fun. Played the crazy golf and pétanque which was fun. Courtesy bus was not running but Buses to town centre and airport stopped just outside hotel. Will return to this hotel when we visit Madeira again.
This hotel really was the perfect break away for myself and my mother, lots of really lovely restaurants and bars close by, and a short walk/bus ride away from the Old Town. The view of the sea and pool from our balcony was magnificent, sunsets were very special. There were great options for breakfast and staff were friendly. Loved the saltwater pool and lots of areas to sunbathe. It was our first time in Madeira and we both said we would return and happily would stay at the Pestana Carlton again.
The Cliff Bay was welcoming and the staff really friendly. We had a lovely room on Floor 10 overlooking the harbour and Funchal.
We opted for b&b and the breakfasts had a good choice of continental breakfast and hot food as well as being able to select other items from the a la carte menu.
The hotel was spotlessly clean and of a classic Madeiran style with lots of wood panelling rather than being super modern.
The balcony was equipped with chairs and a table as well as sunloungers.
We had a great stay at the Apartamento Batista by Horizon View Madeira. Edgar was amazing, he made the communication very easy and was super helpful even when our flight got cancelled and we had to change our check-in time. The apartment is great, it's big and it has all the right utensils. It was easy to get to Funchal center by foot (around 25min) but it's easier if you have a car (there's also a private parking in the property which was a great plus). I would definitely stay again.
Great, quiet place in the hills above Funchal. The parking is on the dead end street close to the house.Small, cozy house feels like home. There is a good size well equipped kitchen with the dining area. We like large Madeira map on the wall. the balcony is accessible from the bedroom and has a stunning view of the city and the ocean. We could walk down to Funchal in about 20 min. Walking back is a uphill hike, but it is possible to take a bus. Easy communication with the owner.
Superb hotel. We had a lovely spacious, sea view room. Comfortable beds and quiet at night. Breakfast was good with lots of options. Staff very friendly and warm. We rented a car and were able to park for free on site (be careful there are limited spaces). Pools and garden were very pleasant to enjoy time relaxing if not out exploring Madeira. Bus stop just outside to get you into central Funchal - a forty minute walk otherwise, or for the aerobús to the airport.
The hotel is just a short walk away from the old town and most of Funchal's main attractions, and it's suitably located even for those who don't like elevation. The rooms and public areas are clean and very well maintained, the furnishing is nice and modern. The rooftop pool area has a fantastic view over the city and the sea. For breakfast, there is a wide variety of treats available in a smorgasbord system. The staff was very helpful throughout our stay.
It was in an excellent location, right in the middle of the high street. 5 minutes walk from the farmer's market and old town funchal. The Kitchen was fully equipped to use ( although we did not use it as we ate out) the shower had plenty of hot water. There was a washing machine in the apartment. It was very nice of them to provide a small welcome goodie kit containing sugarcane honey cookies, a 5cl bottle of Madeira wine and Madeira bananas.
I really loved the place, from the amazing and really helpful staff to delicious breakfast and amazing location in the city center. Also I love the details, so names of the rooms based on Levadas around Madeira was very cute detail. Plus when we had the early morning hiking trip, they were so nice to prepare snack for us for the trip. If you are planning a stay in Funchal, I HIGHLY recommend to stay in Zarco! Thank you again for great stay :)
Amazing location in central Funchal, about 10 minutes’ walk to just about any restaurant, shop, dock, or cable car. Free off-street parking in a gated/secure lot around back. Very spacious apartment with fully equipped kitchen and washing machine. Everything was spotless. It’s hard to believe how wonderful everything was, especially for the price. If we come back to Madeira, we’ll definitely check to see if they have availability!
Beautiful traditional hotel very close to the old town and all its restaurants. A real Madeira experience that one can't get at all the characterless modern hotels. Superb facilities with two lovely pools and the ability to swim in the sea. Very friendly and helpful staff. Quiet at night - a real oasis- but within easy walking distance nightlife. A perfect place to stay.
Suite was clean and spacious, located a 5 min walk away from Funchal centre and about 15mins from the old town/cable car. Angelo (the host) was amazing, nothing was too much trouble & he is extremely knowledgeable & passionate about Madeira. He hosts a BBQ on a Friday evening for guests and this was the best food we had whilst in Madeira.
Sparkling clean, small boutique hotel in a quiet area. It is not a 5*, but all hotels in Madeira have inflated rankings, so we kind of expected it. The fact that it’s not in the old town is an advantage, because it is very quiet at night. Buses run regularly to the old town. Good selection for breakfast. We would happily stay again.
Really lovely and well designed apartment in an excellent location. Feels like you are in the heart of the Old Town but yet it's nice and quiet. We had been staying outside of Funchal and only stayed here on our final night in Madeira, we regret not spending more time here as the apartment was so nice and the location was perfect.
This family-run hotel was a great stay for my time in Madeira for a girls' trip! Each morning's breakfast included great coffee and local fruit with other hot and cold options, and the welcome cake was a really nice touch! The rooftop terrace was beautiful and offers great views over Funchal, and the location was perfect!
We are very satisfied with our stay in FourViews Baia. Nice room, very good cleaning service, excelent breakfast, long check out, free pool, wellness, great bars etc. One of the best hotels, what I visited. Location near old town, free parking. If I come back to Madeira, I will only stay in Baia. Thanks
It was perfect! Location was awesome, and the room was awesome too.
The host does it all with a smile on her face. She helped us rent a car, helped us with navigation - showing the best spots in Madeira… and even booked our dolphins trip.
highly recommend.
The hotel is super close to everything, including the marina and main street of Funchal. It's location is perfect, especially for first time visitors of Madeira. The staff is nice, helping the guests to have a great stay. The pool is fine, but a bit small.
Rooms were gorgeous! Bed was so comfy, everything brand new and super clean.
Pool bar & pool with views or Funchal was incredible
Would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Madeira!
