A Gem of a place, nestled in the foothills, 5 mins drive from the old city of Monsaraz. An almost all women team of efficient, ever helpful and friendly crew run this pristine white and blue walled resort with 2 swimming pools, cabanas, spacious rooms, sit outs, good breakfast (the best selection of fruit i have seen in Europe) ample parking
The night sky is stunning here. Do book a slot at the observatory 7-8 min ride away.
We also attended the June 1st beginning of Summer beach party at the Praia Fleuvial, one tip of the beautiful lake Alonqueva - great music and dance on the beach.. Also do the one hour boat cruise.
São Lourenço do Barrocal is located in the foothills of the medieval village of Monsaraz and nearby the Alqueva lake.

Wow, what a gem of a hotel. This is a truly spectacular property that exceeded even our high expectations. The staff and service were fantastic and the place gives you an immediate sense of calm. The surroundings are absolutely stunning. What we also appreciated was that the food, drinks and activities were not overpriced, so you left feeling like you were not taken advantage of, which can be the case for a lot of high end hotels. The food was delicious and in beautiful settings.

We loved staying here at Casa Pinto. It was such a treat to be in this amazing old village in such a beautiful room. The rooftop balcony was amazing!!! Breakfast was also great and we had lots of choices of what to eat.

The area is very quiet, the room was well equipped (fridge, kettle, heater) and the hosts - extremely nice. It's really close to the Mondaraz Castle (which you can see from the house). The breakfasts are varied and tasty.

Wonderful, fantastic.
Wonderful, fantastic. I loved the peace and harmony that one can breathe, Monsaraz at the top of the Monte, and the company of the chickens, ducks and turkeys. I wrote in peace, in the company of my friends and with the guidance of the stars of a fantastic sky, the likes of which I had never seen.

A day is all you need for the city of Monsaraz.
A day is all you need for the city of Monsaraz. If you want to explore Reguengos and it's vinyards then you may not need to stay in Monsaraz itself which is difficult with cars.
We visited the week leading into Easter Sunday and very few restaurants were open in the evening, in fact we only found one so be prepared to wait and have limited choices

Nice castle. Be sure you research your stay options.
Nice castle. Be sure you research your stay options. There are rooms at the castle itself as well as nearby houses. The hotel we stayed at was a bit overpriced and disappointing.
Views are incredible from the top. 2 hours is enough to have reserved lunch at the castle and then walk around the grounds for photos. Or 1 hour without lunch. Parking is tricky and we parked near the bottom and walked 10 minutes up the hill

Monsaraz, the graceful medieval village of Monsaraz,...
Monsaraz, the graceful medieval village of Monsaraz, maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. Made of lime and schist, this place whispers us, between the echo of our footsteps in its streets. A lot of magnificent stories could be told about its courageous kings, Knights Templar, brave people and dames of simple beauty.
Now the night is covering you with its cozy blanket of stars. Sit down at one of the restaurants in Monsaraz. Taste the best traditional Alentejo food, like the crumbs or the lamb. As for Alentejo wine, savour a good Reserva Monsaraz with your meal. The view over Alqueva Lake completes the sensory nirvana. Don’t finish your night without admiring the show of constellations and planets, which shine more intensely on the sky.

Monsaraz is genuinely one of the most beautiful places I’ve...
Monsaraz is genuinely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. It felt like stepping back in time to a slower pace of life, a rustic, cobbled haven with the most fantastic 360 degree views of the lake, valley and the castle on top of the hill. It is well worth putting on your alarm to wake up for the sunrise when the village is still asleep and watching the place wake up including the animals on the distance. It was spectacular. The food was local and very rustic and delicious using produce from the Alentejo (we ate at Sabores de monsaraz and were hosted by Isabel, a local lady with a small but delicious local menu). The wine was also really good. It was incredibly hot (45 degrees) so would maybe be better to visit outside of the summer months. The vineyards surrounding monsaraz were beautiful we had a very special meal at Esporao, which is well worth the money having the 7 course tasting menu and accompanying wine flight, it felt like immense luxury whilst capturing the charm Portuguese food and produce. The village itself doesn’t have a shop for essentials so my advice would be to drive to reguengos de monsaraz prior to your stay to stock up on water and snacks so you can relax when you get there. It truly was a magical place to stay for a few nights.
We very much enjoyed our one-night stay! The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was well organized and comfortable. The hotel is a lovely 25 minute walk from the castle up the steep old path along the side of the hill. And the breakfast was truly breathtaking- the best breakfast we had in Portugal and one of the best ever. Just make sure you're hungry (I walked to Xerez Cromlech and back before breakfast and it was a really good idea)
This hotel is a gem. It is a quiet comfortable place to stay, very close to Monsaraz. The room was clean and cozy and the staff were very hospitable. A variety of food was provided for breakfast. The breakfast room also offered a feast for the eyes. There are various paintings and sculptures to enjoy while having your breakfast. The outside garden is pretty and offers space for meditation and simply enjoying the peacefulness of the surroundings.
The location is truly breathtaking, the only thing you hear are birds and crickets, absolute silence. The sunset view over the plain is a work of art and during nightfall, the sky is full of stars, be prepared to be amazed with it. Breakfast was really good and the staff was incredibly nice. One of the best places I've stayed in Portugal so far.
Honestly, there's not much to add to my 10 points. São Lourenço Barrocal, in my opinion, is the best hotel in Portugal. It couldn't be better, how the local natural landscape bounds it, the comfort, the staff, the food, and the attention to the smallest details. It was our third year in a row, and I hope to continue to come back every year.
Great place, very well-located (less than 10m by car from Monsaraz and Alqueva fluvial beach). The bedroom was great, very comfortable and super clean. The jacuzzi and the sofa outside were a plus, very pleasant to read and rest or eat a light snack (there is also a small fridge and microwave inside). Having a pool was also nice to refresh!
Breakfast was exceptional with a nice variety of homemade jams and breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal and eggs.
Hosts we’re very welcoming and provided information on Monsaraz, where to eat.
We especially enjoyed watching the sunset on the rooftop terrace with a glass of wine. Saturday market was fun.
All corners of this boutique hotel have been beautifully designed and feature soulful furniture pieces and decor. The owners and the staff are very friendly and make you feel right at home. And the breakfast… A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Make sure you try the pão de queijo waffles with pear marmalade.
Location is great and the building has lots of character. It’s a great venue. Very original.
We had tickets to go to the observatory at night and it’s only 5 minutes drive from the hotel.
Monsaraz is beautiful and it’s only a short drive from the hotel.
This is a gorgeous little hotel in a spectacular setting! Right on the main square of this amazingly beautiful village. The room and building are totally beautiful and comfortable. Breakfast was really good and lots of options.
cozy stay in Monsaraz, the property and room were beautiful, old stone building but very comfortable (warm/heated on a winter night), clean, and easy location to explore the castle/town. very nice breakfast.
Perfect location for a visit to Monsaraz and the surrounding area. The pool was a real bonus when we got back from our day time activities . The apartment was ideal for us- parents and a 25 year old daughter
The staff at this property were so nice. The hotel has a stupendous view with comfortable, but small rooms. The breakfast is one of the best of our whole 2 month trip. We would recommend this hotel.
The location was magnificent in the tiny town of Monsaraz. Unfortuntely, our stay did not include breakfast. The room was wonderful, beautiful architectural details, comfortable, hot water, perfect!
The hotel is gorgeous - absolutely beautiful, especially for a family with kids. For young couples, not ideal - but works well because the place is so nice it offsets for this. Stunning!
We had a very good stay in our private house in a quiet village really close to Monsaraz. Bruno is super friendly. We would definitely visit again, really good value for a sharp price.
